Middle school Division

Jump to a Section:

Welcome to the Middle School Division of Genesis Preparatory School!

Middle school represents two important transitions. First, students move from the elementary school environment to the middle school, where expectations and the way classes work change. Students transition from the single class and teacher classroom to the middle division approach, where they have more than one teacher and travel to different classrooms for instruction.

These students have been provided a strong foundation of coursework throughout their elementary school years and in middle school that foundation allows them to begin to reach their academic potential. This time can be challenging and exciting and even a little bit disorienting, and our program and supportive environment allows them to make that transition easier.

The second transition occurs throughout the three years of middle school. The emphasis shifts to preparing students for success in their high school classes and, later, in college. The Genesis Preparatory School focuses on four areas of student development: emotional, social, intellectual, and character education. At Genesis Prep, we understand that each of our middle school students has unique needs, and we are committed to helping them navigate challenging situations while helping them strive for excellence.  During this time, GPS focuses on helping students think “outside the box” and develop a more abstract thought process as a part of their college preparatory education. We encourage them to look for ways to improve, develop, and continue to create a foundation of hard work and a love of learning.

High School Courses in Middle School

As part of our individualized approach, math students who demonstrate mastery early will be considered for enrichment and/or advancement to a higher math course. The result of this acceleration may be that a middle school student will be enrolled in a high school math course during his or her 8th grade year. Students will also take the equivalent of a high school Spanish I course during their 7th and 8th grades.

Honor Roll Qualifications

Traditionally, independent schools award honor roll distinctions. These distinctions are based upon a cumulative grade point average. Honor Roll privileges at Genesis Preparatory School are still based upon students receiving ALL As for the A Honor Roll or As and Bs for the A/B Honor Roll. Honor Roll Certificates are given at the end of each quarter.

Homework

Homework is an important part of each middle division student’s day. Homework gives each student the opportunity to review the day’s lessons, master additional material, and prepare for class the following day. As both short and long term assignments are given, it is necessary for students, with the assistance of both faculty and parents, to budget time wisely.

Part of the transition from the single room, single teacher model of elementary school to the multi-teacher, multi-course model of the middle division is the careful use of time and attention to effectively complete assignment. We expect all Genesis Prep students to complete assignments in a timely fashion, to school standards, and to the best of their abilities.
